Fiji Islands

Nadi Airport welcomes the majority of international travellers to Fiji, a suburban tourist hub on the dry west side of Viti Levu. Most stay here for a day or two to organize travels to other parts of Fiji, or use it as a convenient and affordable base for exploring the surrounding countryside and offshore islands.

The most popular holiday destination in Fiji is the Mamanuca Islands, a gorgeous collection of small islands just off the coast from Nadi. Here you’ll find sublime beaches, lots of organized water activities, tiny coral cayes and commercial boutique resorts. Almost as popular, especially with families, are the beach resorts south of Nadi Airport either at Denarau Island or along the Coral Coast - the large hotels usually offer good value all inclusive packages but there are a handful of small inns and holiday cottages which make a great base for sightseeing or to indulge in adventure tours around Pacific Harbour.

Budget holiday-makers in search of sun and sand tend to head straight to the Yasawa Group, a string of pretty volcanic islands with great snorkelling and plenty of budget beach resorts between two and five hours by boat from Nadi.

Scuba divers and nature lovers are drawn to either Kadavu, in the south, which has great snorkelling and remote villages, or north to Savusavu or Taveuni, between which lies the exceptional Rainbow Reef. The most beautiful of the two northern islands is Taveuni - almost half of the island is dedicated as a National Park with lush tropical rainforest, hundreds of waterfalls and several excellent hiking trails.

To get off the beaten track though you’ll need to head to the inner coral islands of the Lomaiviti Group with a side trip to tropical Ovalau boasting the quirky old capital and several eco retreats. Otherwise, some of the best adventures are in exploring the mountainous interior or rugged east coast of Viti Levu, the main island, which ironically has some of Fiji’s remotest and most traditional of villages.
